Bookkeeping Manager – Payroll & Tax
Job Purpose:
To manage the day-to-day operations of the bookkeeping department, with a focus on payroll, VAT, and tax compliance. The Bookkeeping Manager will oversee a team delivering high-quality services to a portfolio of clients, ensuring all statutory obligations are met on time and to a high standard. This is a hands-on role requiring technical competence, attention to detail, and strong leadership skills.
Key Responsibilities:
Bookkeeping & Payroll:
Oversee the preparation and review of bookkeeping records for a wide range of clients, using cloud accounting software (e.g., Xero, QuickBooks, Sage).
Manage end-to-end payroll processing for multiple clients, ensuring compliance with PAYE, RTI, auto-enrolment, and other HMRC requirements.
Maintain and update payroll records, including starters/leavers, pension contributions, and statutory payments.
Troubleshoot payroll and bookkeeping issues and provide guidance to clients and staff.
VAT & Tax Compliance:
Oversee timely preparation and submission of VAT returns under various schemes (standard, cash accounting, flat rate).
Liaise with the tax department to support accurate data transfer for year-end accounts and corporation tax returns.
Support clients with Making Tax Digital (MTD) compliance and digital recordkeeping standards.
Team & Client Management:
Manage and develop a team of bookkeepers and payroll administrators, allocating work, setting objectives, and reviewing performance.
Maintain strong client relationships and act as a primary point of contact for queries regarding bookkeeping, VAT, and payroll.
Ensure deadlines are met and client expectations are managed effectively.
Internal Process & Development:
Drive process improvements and implement best practices across the department.
Ensure compliance with internal quality standards and HMRC regulations.
Provide training, coaching, and support to junior staff.
Ideal Candidate Profile:
Experience & Skills:
At least 5 years’ experience in bookkeeping and payroll, ideally within an accountancy or bureau environment.
Previous experience in a supervisory or managerial role.
In-depth knowledge of VAT rules, payroll legislation, and digital accounting systems.
High attention to detail and accuracy.
Excellent organisational and time management skills.
Strong communication and client relationship skills.
Confident using cloud accounting and payroll software such as Xero, Sage, QuickBooks, BrightPay, or Moneysoft.
Qualifications:
AAT qualified (or equivalent) preferred.
Payroll-specific qualifications (e.g., CIPP) desirable.
Ongoing CPD encouraged and supported.
