Bookkeeping Manager – Payroll & Tax

Job Purpose:

To manage the day-to-day operations of the bookkeeping department, with a focus on payroll, VAT, and tax compliance. The Bookkeeping Manager will oversee a team delivering high-quality services to a portfolio of clients, ensuring all statutory obligations are met on time and to a high standard. This is a hands-on role requiring technical competence, attention to detail, and strong leadership skills.

Key Responsibilities:

Bookkeeping & Payroll:

  • Oversee the preparation and review of bookkeeping records for a wide range of clients, using cloud accounting software (e.g., Xero, QuickBooks, Sage).

  • Manage end-to-end payroll processing for multiple clients, ensuring compliance with PAYE, RTI, auto-enrolment, and other HMRC requirements.

  • Maintain and update payroll records, including starters/leavers, pension contributions, and statutory payments.

  • Troubleshoot payroll and bookkeeping issues and provide guidance to clients and staff.

VAT & Tax Compliance:

  • Oversee timely preparation and submission of VAT returns under various schemes (standard, cash accounting, flat rate).

  • Liaise with the tax department to support accurate data transfer for year-end accounts and corporation tax returns.

  • Support clients with Making Tax Digital (MTD) compliance and digital recordkeeping standards.

Team & Client Management:

  • Manage and develop a team of bookkeepers and payroll administrators, allocating work, setting objectives, and reviewing performance.

  • Maintain strong client relationships and act as a primary point of contact for queries regarding bookkeeping, VAT, and payroll.

  • Ensure deadlines are met and client expectations are managed effectively.

Internal Process & Development:

  • Drive process improvements and implement best practices across the department.

  • Ensure compliance with internal quality standards and HMRC regulations.

  • Provide training, coaching, and support to junior staff.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

Experience & Skills:

  • At least 5 years’ experience in bookkeeping and payroll, ideally within an accountancy or bureau environment.

  • Previous experience in a supervisory or managerial role.

  • In-depth knowledge of VAT rules, payroll legislation, and digital accounting systems.

  • High attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.

  • Strong communication and client relationship skills.

  • Confident using cloud accounting and payroll software such as Xero, Sage, QuickBooks, BrightPay, or Moneysoft.

Qualifications:

  • AAT qualified (or equivalent) preferred.

  • Payroll-specific qualifications (e.g., CIPP) desirable.

  • Ongoing CPD encouraged and supported.
